Celebrating a Lifetime of Bridge, Friendship, and Sportsmanship: My Journey to the 2025 Sidney Lazard Sportsmanship Award

July 29, 20253 min read

Forty-five years ago, a simple bridge game in Los Angeles changed my life forever. It was there that I met a man who would become not just a friend, but a brother—Mitch Dunitz. Today, I am honored to share the story of Mitch’s induction as the 2025 recipient of the Sidney Lazard Sportsmanship Award, a recognition that celebrates not only his exceptional achievements in bridge but also his generosity, dedication, and the profound impact he has had on our community.

A Friendship That Transcends Differences

When I first met Mitch, I was a young man from Pakistan, a Muslim, and Mitch was from Detroit, Jewish. Our backgrounds couldn’t have been more diverse, yet from day one, we connected on a level that transcended culture, religion, and geography. Over the decades, our friendship has been a constant source of strength and joy. We have celebrated weddings, births, and even our children’s marriages together. Mitch has been a steadfast presence through life’s ups and downs, embodying the true spirit of brotherhood.

The Bridge Legend

Mitch is a legend in the world of bridge. His playful spirit, legendary punctuality, and generosity are well known among those who have had the pleasure of knowing him. He is a multiple national champion and a world medalist, admired by peers for his skill and sportsmanship. But Mitch’s contributions go far beyond his personal achievements at the table.

Dedication to the Game and Community

Mitch’s commitment to bridge is evident in his extensive volunteer work. He has served on the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) Hall of Fame and selection committees for over 46 years, even chairing these committees. His tireless efforts earned him the ACBL Volunteer of the Year award. Mitch has also been instrumental in securing the future of bridge through his generous contributions to the ACBL Educational Foundation.

One of Mitch’s proudest accomplishments is founding programs that promote bridge at the college level across the United States and Canada. These initiatives are growing steadily, inspiring a new generation of players. Every Sunday, Mitch mentors junior players, sharing his passion and expertise with infectious enthusiasm.

A Renaissance Man Beyond Bridge

Mitch’s interests extend well beyond the bridge table. He possesses an encyclopedic knowledge of rock music, a knack for winning fantasy sports leagues, and a deep love for history and movies. He can often be found reciting lines from Marx Brothers films, showcasing his wide-ranging intellect and humor. Mitch truly embodies the spirit of a Renaissance man, with a heart as vast as his interests.

Reflections on Sportsmanship and Legacy

In his acceptance speech, Mitch humbly reflected on the life lessons bridge has taught him: to win with class and lose with dignity. He acknowledged the honor of receiving an award named after Sidney Lazard, a man who personified respect, trust, and mentorship in both bridge and life. Mitch expressed his hope to continue living up to the high standards set by Sidney Lazard, striving always to be the best version of himself.

He also shared heartfelt gratitude for the unwavering support of his wife, Jodie, and his three children, who have been his cheerleaders throughout his bridge journey. Mitch’s partnership with Ifi Bakai, his close friend and brother, is a testament to the power of friendship and mutual respect.

Conclusion: A Toast to Friendship, Bridge, and the Future

Mitch Dunitz’s story is one of passion, dedication, and generosity. His journey reminds us that bridge is more than a game—it is a community, a source of lifelong friendships, and a platform for personal growth. As we celebrate Mitch’s well-deserved recognition with the Sidney Lazard Sportsmanship Award, we also look forward to the future of bridge, inspired by his example.

Please join me in raising a glass to Mitch Dunitz—to friendship, laughter, and a lifetime of incredible memories. May his legacy continue to enrich the bridge community for generations to come.
