The 2024 Fall National Bridge Championship (NABC) is currently taking place in Las Vegas, and it has been a thrilling and competitive event so far. Hosted by the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL), this tournament draws players from all over the world to compete in a series of intense bridge events at the Westgate Las Vegas Resort & Casino. Running from November 28 to December 8, this year's tournament is offering a variety of events for all levels of bridge players—from casual enthusiasts to world-class professionals.
Current Events and Tournament Updates
The main tournaments of the NABC are well underway, with Reisinger Board-A-Match Teams and the Soloway Knockout Teams drawing some of the most competitive teams in the world. These events are structured in such a way that players must adapt quickly to different formats, and every match counts toward the final standings. Players are competing for Masterpoints, as well as the prestige that comes with winning in front of a large audience of spectators and other bridge professionals. In the Reisinger Board-A-Match Teams, teams of four or six players compete against each other in a Board a Match format. This format intensifies the stakes as each point scored can make a difference in the outcome of the match. Every board is played against just one opposing team with either a win, lose, or draw. It’s a mentally difficult match over three days.
The Major Pair events have concluded with the three day Kaplan Blue Ribbons, Nail Life Master Pairs, and Mixed Pairs
Players looking for less intense competition but still an opportunity to win Masterpoints can participate in events such as the Gold Rush Pairs and Intermediate/Newcomer Games if they qualify with under 750 masterpoints and 299 respectively.. These games are designed to help players who are newer to the game compete in a more relaxed environment, but still with the thrill of being at the nationals. There are also Regional events with swiss, knockouts, and pairs daily.
Educational Opportunities at the NABC. Beyond the tournaments, the NABC also offers a variety of educational seminars and workshops designed to help bridge players of all levels improve their game. Some of the most sought-after lectures are being held by world-renowned players like Jerry Helms and Patty Tucker. These lectures cover essential bridge strategies like suit defense, slam bidding, and advanced techniques like doubling strategies that can turn the tide in close matches. The "Learn Bridge in a Day?" workshop is also drawing plenty of attention, especially from beginners or players returning to the game after a break. The interactive workshop provides both instruction and opportunities for players to practice with a coach, making it an invaluable session for those looking to improve their game quickly
Bridge Social Activities and Networking
In addition to competitive play and educational sessions, there are a host of social activities designed to bring together bridge players from different backgrounds and levels. The NABC is not just a tournament but a chance to celebrate the game, meet other players, and make lasting connections within the bridge community. From Club and Teacher Receptions to fun trivia nights and casual games nights giving players a place to socialize away from the card table. . For players looking to relax or network, the Patron Lounge is a great spot to grab a light lunch, sip coffee, and discuss strategy or share experiences with others
Key Dates and Upcoming Events
While the NABC will officially run through December 8, there are several important dates and activities to keep in mind for those attending or following the tournament:
December 6-8 will see the closing rounds of major team events like the Reisinger Board-A-Match and Keohane Swiss, and the Mixed Swiss Teams , with high levels of competition as the finalists vie for the top honors in these last three events.
Free bridge lessons from celebrity players are continuing, with sessions focused on improving play and understanding advanced bidding systems
Additionally, the NABC features regular mini-lessons on specific bridge concepts. For example, Donna Compton will be leading a session on slam bidding on December 1, while Jeff Hand presented a valuable talk on trump contracts on November 29
Las Vegas: More Than Just Bridge
Of course, no trip to Las Vegas is complete without experiencing the city's iconic attractions. Tournament attendees have the opportunity to explore Las Vegas beyond the bridge tables. Whether it’s catching one of the world-famous shows, indulging in gourmet dining experiences, or enjoying the vibrant nightlife, there is always something to do when the cards are set aside for the day.
